Joseph Christian Leyendecker
(1874-1951)
J. C. Leyendecker followed his early training at the Art Institute of Chicago with a sojourn in Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian before returning to the United States in 1898. He began an outstanding career in illustration, quickly achieving popularity with his poster-like designs. While this led to some early book commissions, Leyendecker’s main focus was always cover artwork and advertising illustrations. Leyendecker achieved lasting fame for his many Saturday Evening Post covers (over 300—second only to Norman Rockwell), and his stylish advertising work for Arrow Shirts and Kuppenheimer Clothes.
