James Montgomery Flagg
(1877-1960)
As a youth, James Montgomery Flagg studied at the Art Students League. He was somewhat of a prodigy, however, and soon began receiving commissions for books, magazines and posters. Flagg did all manner of illustration, from comic art to satire, and from cover art to Hollywood portraiture, but will always be remembered for his "I Want You" image of Uncle Sam, originally done for Leslie’s Weekly in 1916. He had a very successful career, working for popular magazines such as Life and Judge, as well as illustrating a number of books, including the popular P. G. Wodehouse stories.
