| Frank Schoonover
studied with Howard
Pyle both at Drexel Institute and at Chadd’s
Ford, ultimately renting space in one of the studios that Pyle built
in Wilmington. Early in his career Schoonover took Pyle’s advice to
gain practical experience for his illustrations, and subsequently
made two extensive journeys to the Hudson Bay area. He went on to
become well-known for his authentic images of Western and Indian
subject matter. During his long and fruitful career, Schoonover not
only illustrated classic books such as Ivanhoe and Joan of
Arc, but also worked for most of the major magazines of the
period. |
