Elizabeth Shippen Green (1871-1954)
As a Philadelphia native, Elizabeth Shippen Green began her artistic training with Robert Vonnah and Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. She then enrolled at Drexel Institute to study with Howard Pyle, where she befriended fellow illustrators Jessie Willcox Smith and Violet Oakley, with whom she lived and worked for much of her early adulthood. Although Green began illustrating for a variety of books and magazines (including The Saturday Evening Post), in 1902 she signed an exclusive contract with Harper’s that lasted over 20 years. Her strong outlines, decorative designs and bold color were both easily reproduced and instantly recognizable.
