Harold Von Schmidt
(1893-1982) |
Born in
California, Harold Von Schmidt first studied art at the San
Francisco Art Institute and the California College of Arts and
Crafts. In 1924 he came East for further training with
Harvey Dunn,
whose influence is evident in Von Schmidt’s dramatic use of color
and design. He specialized in Western paintings, based upon his own
experiences as a cowhand, as well as stories he heard from his
"forty-niner" grandfather who raised him. Over his long career Von
Schmidt illustrated stories for The Saturday Evening Post,
American Magazine, Collier’s and Woman’s Home
Companion. |
