Sarah Stillwell Weber
(1878-1939) |
Sarah Stilwell
studied with Howard
Pyle both at the Drexel
Institute and later at the summer sessions in Chadds Ford. She began
to receive commissions while still with Pyle, going on to illustrate
covers or stories for such magazines as The Saturday
Evening Post, Collier’s, St. Nicholas and
Harper's Bazaar. Stilwell was comfortable in both oils and
pen-and-ink, and her imaginative, somewhat exotic images were highly
sought-after by publishers. Her varied career also included
children's books (she was particularly adept at fairy-tales) as well
as a great deal of advertising work. |
